Art & Law

Focus on Art + Law

CLANCCO aims to distinguish itself from other art practices, artistic and legal institutions and organizations, websites, and blogs by focusing on a rigorous study of the effects of law on cultural production and reception. The effects of law on artistic and visual production are further highlighted by the direct relationship between socio-economic and juridical discourses.

CLANCCO is specifically interested in the impact of intellectual property law, property law, and the first amendment on the production of visual culture. In using the term visual culture, CLANCCO includes a wide range of practices, including but not limited to urban planning, sculpture, film, architecture, writing, and other forms of static and non-static artistic productions.

Emerging Processes of Cultural Production

Simultaneously, CLANCCO is interested in how law as both discourse and practice can be used by cultural practitioners to invigorate avant-garde processes of cultural production. Examples such as the use of judicial courts to enforce artistic intellectual property rights, the use of sculptural structures to claim ownership over private property, and the testing of free speech doctrine via imminent lawless action are but a few of the emerging artistic and cultural models. In effect, readers are welcome to keep abreast of such issues here and participate in the ongoing dialogue regarding these problematics.
