About Us
Clancco is an interdisciplinary web project based out of Brooklyn, New York, which explores, investigates, and examines the relationship between art and law. Clancco keeps its readers abreast of news and events dealing with the intersection of art and law, with a particular focus on intellectual property law, the first amendment, nonprofit arts organizations, and their effect on contemporary visual art. Through writings, interviews, lectures and symposiums, Clancco aims to disseminate this information to art and legal professionals as well as to students from educational institutions at all levels.
Simultaneously, Clancco is interested in how law as both discourse and practice can be used by cultural practitioners to invigorate avant-garde processes of cultural production. Examples such as the use of judicial courts to enforce artistic intellectual property rights, the use of sculptural structures to claim ownership over private property, and the testing of free speech doctrine via imminent lawless action are but a few of the emerging artistic and cultural models. In effect, readers are welcome to keep abreast of such issues here and participate in the ongoing dialogue regarding these problematics.
Clancco will update its readers on the discursive and practical connections of art and law via our Art & Law section and our Writings & Interviews section. Our Art & Law section will opine on news gathered from other global sources on a daily and weekly basis, while our Writings & Interviews will focus on either commissioned or editorial writings as well as interviews with cultural practitioners and legal scholars.
Lastly, in our News & Links section available on our front page, Clancco makes available links to other web sites which give a wide, varied, and in-depth look into the visual and legal areas listed above. Links include the U.S. Copyright Office, The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, as well as the First Amendment Center, The Fair Use Project, and numerous law school centers which focus on these legal issues.
